Double Hubble Trouble - What's Next for the Ailing Space Telescope? — The Cosmic Companion July 3, 2021
The world's best-known space telescope is still down, as NASA attempts a second round of repairs to the orbiting observatory.
A case of double Hubble trouble as the space telescope is still down, and NASA prepares to place the orbiting observatory on backup systems…
The Hubble Space Telescope remains out of operation, following a failure in a payload computer on June 13.
The problem was tracked down to the Science Instrument Command and Data Handling unit, which includes the faulty payload computer. Repair teams are also examining the Command Unit/Science Data Formatter, which sends and formats data, as well as a power regulator within the power control unit.
If one of these units is found to be the source of the problem, engineers will switch Hubble over to backup systems. This is a fairly complicated operation, and mission engineers are currently designing procedures to carry out the task, which will be tested on simulators before commands are sent to Hubble.
