A new image of the California Nebula gives us a chance to talk about its connections to a Fifth-Century sailor and climate change!
What does the California Nebula have to do with a Fifth-Century sailor from China and climate change?
Ancient Chinese records tell the tale of Hui Shan, who (it is said) set sail across the Pacific Ocean in the year 458 CE.
On his return, Hui Shan reported finding a land far from the coast of his homeland. He noted the region he came across was filled with tall trees made of a red wood. Some historians speculate Hui Shan may have found California.
Meanwhile, south of California at that time (in what is now Mexico), the Mayan Empire marked its 3,000th birthday.
