Is that a Triple-Star System Up Your Nose, Orion? - The Cosmic Companion 1 October 2021
An eccentric trio of rings surrounding a triple-star system might provide hints of a dark, frozen Jupiter-like world far from their distant stars.
A triple-star system seen on the “nose” of Orion may be home to a rare type of exoplanet…
Orion is one of the most-recognizable constellations in the skies of the northern hemisphere. If one were to zoom in on the “nose” of the mighty hunter, one would eventually come upon a triple star system, called GW Orionis, around 1,300 light years from Earth.
This stellar family is enveloped by a disk of gas and dust. This, in itself, is not unusual (cue Tom Jones), but two teams of astronomers have now found evidence for an exoplanet traveling an orbit circling all three of the stars. If confirmed by other studies, this will be the first planet ever found completely orbiting a stellar trio.
