A Thanksgiving sunspot? For the first time, astronomers are able to predict sunspots — get ready for a big one to arrive for the holiday.

As Americans prepare for a 2020-style Thanksgiving, astronomers are busy with their own preparations, readying to observe a massive sunspot predicted to peak on Thanksgiving Day.
Using helioseismology, developed in the 1990’s, astronomers are able to listen to changing sound waves emanating from beneath the surface of the Sun. This allows researchers to predict sunspots, once an impossible task. On November 18, the National Science Foundation announced the eminent arrival of a large sunspot on Thursday, November 26 — Thanksgiving.
